Nokia 5800 XpressMusic v20.0.012 firmware upgrade available in India

Friday, March 6th, 2009

I read in the official Nokia forum today morning that firmware upgrade is now officially available in India. My phone (and I believe most others) came with v11.0.008 installed. I dialled *#0000# to check if the upgrade is available FOTA (over the air, meaning: done directly on the mobile provide it has net access) and it was not.

Changelog

I then connected the mobile to my laptop and started Nokia Software Updater program. Sure enough, it detected and showed the upgrade. Note: Make sure that when you connect the mobile to your computer the mode is set to ‘PC Suite’. The upgrade file size was around 120MB. Once the download was complete, it took 5 minutes to upgrade the firmware.

After the upgrade, the phone restarted itself and prompted me to enter the date and time. The UI felt slower than earlier initially but after using it for about 10 minutes it became much faster. Search feature was not working with “System error”. I googled about this and one of the suggested fixes was to do a soft reset. That didn’t help. The fix was to remove one of the installed applications. I had one chess game that I was not using much and when I removed it, search feature started working fine.

These are some useful notes for my own reference as I use my new mobile, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Change the format of time displayed on the standby screen from analog to digital:

Menu > Applications > Clock > Options > Settings > Time Zone

Enable nice visual effects:

Settings -> Personal -> Themes -> General
There is one theme listed on my phone “Sound Waves”. Select it and press
Options -> Theme effects -> On

Soft reset: *#7370# (possible fix for ‘Certificate Expired error’ and ‘System error’ upon Search)

Hard reset (also known as 3-finger salute; will only work with firmware v20.0.012):

1. Switch off the phone
2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), red button and the camera button
3. While holding these buttons, hold the power button for a second to switch on the phone
4. Release when the phone shows the Nokia hands logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen
